Project Description:

In 2011, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Colorado Bridge Enterprise (CBE) requested that RockSol manage the reconstruction of the 6th Avenue (US 6) Bridge over Sheridan Boulevard (SH 95). The project consisted of removing the existing, functionally obsolete bridge and replacing it with a 3-span, prestressed concrete I-girder bridge. Additional improvements included widening sidewalks under the bridge along Sheridan Boulevard and at four pedestrian islands; modifying the medians north and south of the bridge to increase left-turn storage capacity enhancing mobility and traffic flow on Sheridan Boulevard; improving lighting; upgrading traffic signals; installing a new storm sewer system; and constructing a water quality pond. To accommodate the new structure and widen the sidewalks underneath the bridge, mechanically stabilized earth walls and soil nail walls were constructed.

RockSol personnel worked with CDOT in an integrated team  providing full project management and contract administration for this bridge replacement project. RockSol’s responsibilities included construction management, inspection, and quality assurance materials testing services. The construction management team closely monitored critical issues such as traffic control for the high traffic volume interchange; construction phasing; road closures during bridge demolition and girder erection; and contractor compliance with the safety critical plan. Additionally, RockSol’s team mentored CDOT staff on-site, provided project documentation, coordinated weekly meetings, and performed public relations tasks in support of CDOT. The CDOT project manager commended RockSol saying, “The entire RockSol staff on the 6th and Sheridan Bridge Project have been everything you could want out of a project team. The team…exceeded all expectations for the successful completion of this project. Their experience, expertise and their collaborative approach to construction management has helped deliver the 6th and Sheridan Bridge Replacement Project ahead of schedule and under budget. The group works well as a team and has also done a great job integrating other staff. Any project that has this team for their construction management is going to be pleased with the results.”
