UDOT Experimenting with New Transportation Technologies

Wednesday, May 06, 2015

The Salt Lake Tribune reported today that the Utah Department of Transportation is experimenting with technological systems that could eventually allow cars to talk to one another or with traffic signals. UDOT’s director of intelligent-transportation systems, Blaine Leonard, is “part of a nationwide technical group trying to work out details and standards.”

There are three tests :

  • Truck Tests – Allow semi trucks to travel as close as 30 feet to test connected-vehicle technology in rural areas
  • Transit Tests – Enable buses to automatically transmit information about their routes, schedules, and speeds
  • Weather Tests – Place sensors on trucks in remote areas to communicate weather data to UDOT
