Construction Project: US 40 over East Fork Elk River Bridge

Wednesday, August 27, 2014

The US 40 bridge over the East Fork of the Elk River, approximately 7 miles west of Steamboat Springs, was identified as one of several bridges in Colorado in poor condition. These bridges were prioritized for replacement utilizing the Funding Advancement for Surface Transportation and Economic Recovery (FASTER) administered by the Colorado Bridge Enterprise (CBE).

The existing narrow two-lane bridge, originally constructed in 1958, was replaced with a new wider two-span concrete prestressed girder bridge. Hydraulics were also improved by realigning the bridge piers with the river. In addition to the bridge demolition and construction, the project consisted of replacing the roadway approaches, increasing shoulder widths, constructing a temporary detour for the roadway and bridge, drainage improvements, paving, traffic control, signing and striping, removal of the detour, final grading, and revegetation.

The major objectives included accommodating the forecasted 100-year flows of the Elk River, increased sight distance for motorists, improved visibility from driveways adjacent to the bridge, enhanced snow storage within the project limits, and minimizing environmental impacts.
